It’s not a bad read, if you are feeling lost about joseki, but it is not the best option available. Each section within a chapter discusses one joseki starting off with the basic framework and then moves on to its variations. The correct strategy for Black in handicap games is to place priority on building influence and to use this influence to relentlessly attack. As in any Go book, some of the diagrams might be too dense, especially if you are at the beginner level. Out of print for more than 20 years, this edition has been extensively revised and rewritten. Through this method of studying I now feel that I have a much better grip on joseki, as to when and when not to use them and even more importantly going through the book I better understand the natural moves of play. Probably better as a reference than something to read.


The content is extremely dry; just like any other joseki book it runs through a whole bunch of them and their variations.

My own approach I cam up with through trial and error is somewhat different. It stresses understanding over memorization, which I liked.

Greetings, I think this is a very fair review and also agree with the point abo ut joseki study being important. What I have done for the past 38 days is that everyday I would complete one section, one joseki. The second chapter present a ‘sure-win strategy’ that Black can use in his handicap games to increase his chances of winning in a five-stone handicap game. It is very useful to read the commentary on joseki that occurred in my games after the fact.

It gives an overall view of this vast field, after which you can profitably joseii your study of the more advanced books on joseki, such as Takao Shinji’s two-volume 21st Century Dictionary of Basic Joseki and joski three-volume series Get Strong at Joseki. These problems are meant to expand on the theoretical discussions contained in the first chapters and to explore variations that were omitted in those chapters.

Little did I know that my perspective was very naiive and very impractical. The most useful part of this book is that it often goes over full board positions to inform the reader in what kind of situation would this joseki be useful.


I believe this book has been unfairly left on the shelf by many amateur players for a variety of reasons. The weaker player who reads this chapter will no doubt pick up useful tips for countering White’s strategies. Definitely more appropriate for advanced players who already have a very firm grasp of the game.
