I love seeing how fancy girls manage to get within the confines of a school uniform! Her first novel, Love and Friendshipis a story of romance and deception among the faculty of a snowbound New England colle Alison Lurie b.
She is an American novelist and academic. My one cavil is that it could do with being throroughly updated and expanded. Her novel “The Truth About Lorin Jones” has a lot of insights into the art world and is very revealing of character through clothes, come to think of it so I can imagine her take on fashion would be fascinating.
Alison Lurie, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, is our savvy guide and interpreter on this tour through the history of fashion. Like many non-academic texts it has “source notes” instead of properly footnoted references. A bit dated thought that was my only criticism. Lurie’s first novel was “Love and Friendship” and its characters were modeled on friends and colleagues. I’m a huge fan of Alison Lurie’s fiction and her non fiction book on children’s literature is interesting too but somehow I’ve never come across this one.
Lurie won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Foreign Affairs.

If I hadn’t read this for a book club, I don’t think I would have picked it up. Alison gave good insight into our current sartorial choices, where they came from and what they mean. I was hoping for something similar to this in Health, Art and Reason: What wonderful serendipity – I bought this in a languags shop years ago for my general shelf.
Nightwear as street wear seems far more commonplace. The classic book about the clothes we wear and what they say about us. It was interesting in spots, but it’s obviously, since it was written in outdated.
There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Unfortunately, as the book was published in”modern-day” does not encompass some of the more interesting fads of the ‘s, and perhaps dwells a bit too much on the ‘s.
