We have only one option: I loved the concepts and ideas behind the story but the overall feel of the plot was disjointed.

I could give this book another blurb: It holds up fairly well – there are few anachronisms introduced by the advance of technology since Norton wrote the stories, but there are a few strange quirks of technology. Classic sci-fi; aliens, spaceships, time travel, adventure and bizarre elements of the moment it was written inserted into the story in this case the Cold War. I have an ebook of it from Baen that I got thinking I’d give it a try, but I haven’t done it yet.

He ends up going to the past with them. But their starship goes haywire and the explorers are trapped in a void between the past and present. And the derelitc isn’t really important, being so advanced as to be magic to the characters. It just, wouldn’t let go of galadtic hands. There’s a hint of racial antagonism- a chip on the shoulder attitude- at the start, for Travis is an Apache but it has a negligible part in the story, though Travis’ background and training stand him in good stead.

Another leap through hyperspace brings the ship to the second planet of an alien solar system. If you bought the eBook combo and abandoned it after ‘Time Traders’ it’s worth picking up and reading. Which brings me to the point in this review when I go: Andre Norton has no peer in his chosen field of science fiction for teenagers. At one point in the book a set of headphones are described. His training and getting to know Ashe was jumpy and undeveloped as well.
