That made it actually really uncomfortable to read. The mundane masked as special can get old pretty fast even though the surrounding art is compelling. The art is amazing, and the people and their voices are unique and terrific to spend time with. I think maybe a scene with Angel when he delivered his grand spoken world performance was nice and his dialect felt real, but the other characters didn’t mean much to me.
Anyway, check this out: I think a lot of people avoid it because it seems pretty intimidating. The Best Books of It was written back in still a decade after the work was done.
It is a lonely task, often seeming hopeless. Of course, I had to go find Cages. The story never quite clicked with me, though.

Reading Cages is like reading Dubliners in an empty, darkened gothic cathedral on some sort of pleasant psychedelic drug. His characters, built out of crazily bent lines and splatters, have perfectly choreographed body language, and his daring visual experiments serve the ideological goals of his writing.

I love Dave McKean’s artwork, his stuff is beeeaauutiful. Their lives and stories intertwine and relate inevitably to each other in ways that point to the mystery mcoean life. McKean takes real aesthetic risks, tries things that are not guaranteed to work. An Artist of the Floating World: Refresh and try again. It was also really heavy in subject.

And it’s not as pretty as Gaiman or, maybe, as profound as Moore or even as funny as the likes of Ennis; it’s singular, it’s its own, it’s a work that deserves recognition. I don’t know, but many of them have cats in them usually black ones.
