The short story better captures the materialistic mood of high society in occupied territories, and gives interesting insights into the characters’ thoughts, but the story does not fu Eileen Chang’s story is literary and precise; the film has more raw devastating power in some scenes, and fleshes out Mr. Chang provides the inside story, and while the stories have all been translated into English, one does not feel that there is anything missing from the work.
