I can recommend Gaudy Night in the quad at Somerville, too! As a child and young teenager, Sayers lived on the southern edge of the Fens at Bluntisham -cum-Earith, where her father was rector.
A few months later the vicar, having learned of Wimsey’s reputation as a sleuth, summons him back to the village to investigate a mysterious body newly discovered in the churchyard, an unknown man secretly buried, who had apparently died about the time of Wimsey’s first visit. It more than just a mere detective story, it is a documentary on a world and village life that has disappeared for good.
Okay, okay, wrong book. Rescued by the Rector, they learn of a mystery involving stolen Emeralds which piques Lord Peter’s interest and sets him on the very convoluted trail of the thief.

Sayers was working in jine London ad agency when she wrote Whose Body and she recreated that world in the book in an absolutely hilarious fashion. There’s not a lot of action and there’s lots of incomprehensible stuff about change ringing and a code that is absurd. The Rector and his wife, Potty Peake, Hezekiah Lavender and Superintendent Blundell are little gems of sharp characterization in few words. Like many books in high school and college, this book suffered from the Required Reading Syndrome.

It seems to me that Strong Poison opened the floodgates to the writer inhabiting her own work, to the point where she pretty much takes over in Busman’s Honeymoon.
Not only was it a brilliant mystery with lots of surprises, it was also a fascinating piece of literature in other ways. Thanks for telling us about the problem.
Let’s say, if you’re not interested in learning a lot of important information about the incredibly archane field of change-ringing, put the book down and back away slowly. A somewhat long and plodding first act, but wow, what a payoff. In their flight, you know there is one thing the Thodays certainly overlooked.
