Presented within the frame hte the supposedly discovered historical Flashman Papers, this book describes the bully Flashman from Tom Brown’s School Days. Sad that we’ll never read of his adventures in the Americam Civil War, or in Mexico, as ans hinted at here that GMF planned a novel about same at some stage, but never got the chance to write it.

I read the last three Flashman books out of order, and this ended up being the last one for me. So the non-conventional story telling of Fraser was a surprise, a pleasant one though. This is the last of the Flashman for me. So it was with a bit of sadness that I took this one. This time out Flashman is thwarting an attempted assassination of Austria’s Emperor Franz Josef “The Road to Charing Cross” ; getting to the bottom of the Tranby Croft gaming scandal-and the Prince of Wales’ involvement in it “The Subtleties of Baccarat” ; and, in the title story, impacting the Zulu war while hunting down a longtime enemy.

Plus I’m pretty sure Flashman was my first antihero, so it was pretty radical stuff. Flash Harry is back! The five stars are for the entire series. On the whole, a thoroughly satisfying romp through the usual Flashman territory with enough twists to keep much of that usual simultaneously unexpected in its specifics.
