The blending of Muslim and Hindu culture is nicely portrayed. The Feast of Roses, are both satisfying read. Part two, which I didn’t read yet, tells of what she did once she became empress. Like most historical fiction, Sundaresan’s novel sundaeesan its fair share of liberties with plot and characterization, but still endeavors to be factually accurate as much as possible.

This is Indu Sundaresan’s first novel, and I have to say, damn good for a first! Aug 23, Ariela rated it it was amazing. Like all fairy-tale heroines, Mehrunnissa is a woman of great beauty, charm, and seemingly magical destiny.
In fairytales, the average usndaresan wants to root for an underdog, not a pampered rich girl who believes she should have a prince. But after all is said and done, he does become emperor and — get this — proves to be a strong, twentieeth ruler.
She was born and raised in India as a daughter of an Indian Air Force pilot,  who died in a crash while on duty. This is a book that truly takes you away. The marriage continues for a number of years with Mehrunnisa longing for home and for Jahangir.
This is her story. My friends think I should poison him — should I listen to them? No trivia or quizzes yet. Muslims drinking alcohol regularly, with no one batting tentieth eyelash?
