Johnno is the book that signposts a very different kind of Australian prose writing. The thing I liked best and this part I really enjoyed was seeing my home town johnnp the eyes of a person who lived there in the post war years. I would’ve liked to have known more about Dante I was totally intrigued by the descriptions of Brisbane and its post-WWII socio-economic climate, but it’s Dante’s the narrator’s has a love-hate relationship with the title character that malojf intended to drive the story.

The former represents prudence and order Dante and the latter Johnno pursues revelry and an all-embracing experience. Most writers have been through their own versions of these things, but Malouf translates it to the page better than most. The story then begins in Dante’s childhood and education at Brisbane Grammar School and then follows the development of the friendship between the staid, conventional Dante and the unruly, eccentric and frequently intoxicated Johnno through school, university and a period of Bohemian-style living joohnno Europe.
I think suburbia is a catalyst for the characters of Johnno and Dante. Anyway, whilst this guy was clearing out one of the rooms he encountered a photo which triggered a bunch of memories of Johnno, a long time friend.
