Rolandsen’s adventures include romancing the curate’s wife, fighting a giant, and opposing the town’s fish-glue magnate. And spring was almost unbearable for sensitive hearts. I don’t know, I’m just used to being surprised by the depth Hamsun can reach with words. He goes around flirting with the factory girls, is the sire of a couple of illegitimate children, proposed to Elise Mack, the daughter of the local fish glue magnate, and become engaged to Olga, the sexton’s daughter.
However, after letting the book marinate in my mind for a few days, it occurs to me that the sudden switches in point of view make the quality of the story more dreamlike. Robert Bly has written that Hamsun “has a magnifying glass on his eye, like a jeweler’s,” and Dreamers gleams like a perfect, semi-precious stone.
Share your knutt with other customers. Refresh and try again. Dreamers is a good book. There are a few issues with the writing too, but I suspect most come out of this being a translation. The mysterious Rolandsen, seemingly a man of many trades and off-the-wall opinions seems to be able to do no right.
Of course, the village people are not in on some plan to destroy him, but rather, he brings his misfortunes upon himself. He’s not quite the smooth operator that he wishes to be though. It’s about a small northland village, with Rolandsen as the antagonist.
That was how it should look. Dreamers is hamsin short book, a character study about an unlikable man presented in only a slightly sympathetic light.

I don’t know many Norwegians, but reading this book makes me wish I knew more. Worster No preview available – Rolandsen has invented a dreamets process for manufacturing fish-glue, the commodity which is the main source of Trader Mack’s wealth; yet Rolandsen, who works as a telegraph operator, lacks sufficient funds to get his invention out into the world. Hamsun has always favored the eccentrics.
It calls into question all sorts of moral issues, much like in the modern day where scientific advancements are still a battleground for moral debate, and Hamsun examines this effortlessly, the reader hardly noticing the serious weight of moral quandaries as they glide across this comical story. A highly recommended book.

This was, at the time of writing, something of a pioneering method and had Deramers known this prior to reading the book I feel I may have gained even more from the reading. But “Dreamers” might not be a good starting point. Hamsun pursued his literary program, debuting in with the psychological novel Hunger. But some people go on dreaming all their lives, and cannot change.
