Somehow Hellman managed to dig her teeth in timeless universals as the greatest artists do that speak at least to our current times in often startling ways.
The play focuses on Regina Hubbard Giddens, in her desire for a share of the family inheritance. Lillian claimed to be unnerved by Tallulah’s “scarlet” reputation. Any theories on why this play, set in and that debuted incontinues to resonate? And later on in the run of the play, not very good. The August Wilson play argued that you cannot correct the past by simply possessing it, and this play argues that you must give up on the past in order to carve out a new way in the world.
The intrigues of their attempted manipulation of each other reminds me of “The Lion in Winter” with bickering royals.
