Resistors in series drop the 24 V to 5V. So, if you are looking for a smaller package of voltage regulator that has small current rating in TO package then this IC might be the right choice. The 33V TVS isn’t good enough.

I want to use LM78L05 as a fixed output voltage regulator as shown in the datasheetas I cited below. How much current does the load draw? The regulated 5V can be obtained from the output pin if the IC.
